School History
Lunenburg High School has been in existence since September 1895. The school was created in response to a May 26, 1894 law that required towns without high schools to pay the tuition of any students attending school in other towns. Lunenburg received so many requests for tuition reimbursement that the town decided it would be less expensive to build a high school of its own.
The first class graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1898. The present high school building, a comprehensive public high school accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, was built in 1957 and houses grades 9 through 12. The high school is located on a campus that contains the elementary school, middle school and new town library and is within walking distance of the center of town. Whereas the first graduating class consisted of one student, the class of 2008 included 138 students.
