Our school was founded in 1968 by a group of local citizens dedicated to creating an environment which encompassed the best in academic, social, emotional and athletic ideals. Founded as a college-preparatory school, Rocky Mount Academy continues its dedication to the mission "to prepare its students for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities to be encountered in life and college."

Providing a Framework for Success

Rocky Mount Academy provides an atmosphere in which students learn the value of integrity, self-discipline and respect for each other. Our safe, family-like environment gives each student a feeling of his or her own worth as an individual and a sense of responsibility as a contributing member of our family.

We encourage each individual to discover, expand and pursue a wide range of personal interests by offering a variety of opportunities and activities outside the classroom. Encouraging involvement and individual growth, Rocky Mount Academy strives to help its students become confident, responsible, self-directed young men and women who are well-equipped for their future. Within this framework our students strive to achieve their potential.

At Rocky Mount Academy, our students are active participants in their own education. Classes are small, typically 10-18 students, which means each student:

Receives more personalized learning

Experiences constant evaluation and positive reinforcement

Encounters more hands-on learning

Expresses ideas and participates in class discussion

Reads, writes and thinks critically every day

Learns to meet high standards

Discovers the meaning of excellence

By offering our students a challenging, yet flexible schedule, Rocky Mount Academy provides much more than the basics we encourage self-expression and creative investigation. Our nurturing, secure atmosphere promotes self-discovery and self-exploration.

Students Learn How to Communicate

Our school combines traditional class work with innovative programs to emphasize communication. Small classes allow our students to write extensively before they graduate. Our graduates are prepared to meet the increased demand for writing in college, and we know this experience will serve them well as adults in the workplace. Exposure to public speaking, from show and tell in lower school, to drama activities, to a required public speaking course in high school, gives our students essential life skills so important in today's changing world.

Research and Technology

From learning letters of the alphabet, to studying the human digestive tract to e-mailing students in such places as Germany, France and Africa, our students practice what they learn using modern technology. In the lower school our students practice skills on computers in their classrooms, and have weekly interactive computer lessons. Middle and high school students have daily use of computers in two computer labs. Many classes integrate the use of technology into their daily lessons.

Our technologically sophisticated library and media center, completed in 1996, is much more than a building full of books and computers. The library is an extraordinary campus resource, offering our students a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. Students have access not only to books, but also to on-line catalogs, computer software, videotapes whatever it takes to meet the ever-increasing needs of the Academy community. As our graduates move on to college, they do so with an understanding of the resources available to them prepared to conduct research.
